Student Writing

Ocean Poetry  New!
Spring 2005: First graders wrote sensory poems about the ocean.

Whale Tales Newsletters
Spring 2004:  My 2nd grade class was very excited to study whales through a collaborative online project, Whale Tales, hosted by Susan Silverman, Pattie Knox, and Linda Brandon.  Be sure to see all the student work from many classes and their excellent whale resources and online activities.

marcy_image2.jpg (49556 bytes)Ocean Poetry   Our class hosted a collaborative Internet project, A Patchwork of Places and Poetry (fall 2002).  Students wrote an acrostic class poem together and another, using Margaret Wise Brown's, The Important Book format.  Information about these poetry formats is given on the project page.  Student drawings about the ocean were displayed in a paper quilt all through the year.   The quilt was cut into pieces in June so everyone could take home the drawing they had done.

Seaside Similes
Spring 2003: Written in the spring as a literature response, our first grade similes have an ocean theme.

Porthole Reports
Spring 2003: Students wrote descriptions of their porthole animal.  They had to go to several sources to locate readable information.   There is very little available on the first grade level for independent reading.

2nd Grade - The Beach
Fall 2002: Students in Mrs. Hallowell's and Mrs. Brandon's class participated in A Patchwork of Places and Poetry also.  They wrote about their favorite place, the Spring Lake beach, and displayed their illustrations in a paper quilt.

Paper Plate Crab and Coffee Filter Octopus

Crab patterns are available from several sources so just use your favorite.  Color the whole plate on one side and cut in half; staple halves together.  Add legs, claws, eyes.

The octopus was fun to make too:   students each tie-dyed 2 coffee filters with food coloring and water (we did this after dipping our Easter eggs and saved them for this activity).  A head pattern was cut from one filter and legs from the other.  Some students swapped filters to get more color variations.  These look a bit translucent when hung in window.
