Poetry is an important component of a child's literacy experience. From finger plays and nursery rhymes to poems, youngsters react to poetry in a special way. Good poems have a simplicity that captures interest and gives a message in just a few words. ** Dr. Denise Johnson offers a rationale for including poetry in reading instruction and online poetry resources for teachers: We work with at least one poem a week. We choral read several times. Repeated readings help students develop fluency and ... it's fun! Often, students will decorate the page and add/color the pictures. Poems are a good way to practice skills too. We look for rhyming words (or describing words, compound words, long/short vowel words, past time words, etc) and color those with a bright crayon. Students share-read with their homework helper at home and return the poem to keep in a 3-ring binder. All the poems are available for extra reading practice in the classroom and the entire collection goes home in the binder at end of year. Poems are listed by season or topic. They can be downloaded and printed for classroom use. They were found from several different sources; credit is given when possible. If no credit is given, the author is unknown.
